A story about a single-dad-turned-housekeeper resonated with audiences, making Who's the Boss? one of the most-watched sitcoms of all time. The series ran from 1984 to 1992 and starred Tony Danza as the single dad.

But in 2022, the actor confirmed a sequel – not a reboot – was in the works.

"I'm still waiting to see what happens with the sequel to Who's the Boss?" he told ET. "We're waiting for the writers."

Alyssa Milano, who played his on-screen daughter Samantha, will also return in the sequel.

"#WhosTheBoss is coming back!!! I've wanted to share this for so long and now I can!" she previously wrote on Instagram.

"We feel the time is right to tell the story of where these amazing characters are today. Can't wait to share their stories with you. So happy."

Since then there has been little update on the progress of the sequel series, so for now let's take a look back at the cast 31 years on – particularly at the casting shift that would've completely changed the show...

Tony Danza: Now

Before Who's the Boss?, Danza starred in Taxi, playing a driver and part-time boxer. The series aired from 1978 to 1983, one year before he scored the gig on Who's the Boss?

When the sitcom ended in 1992, he remained on the small screen, appearing in hit shows including The Practice and Family Law. In the late '90s, he headlined his own sitcom, The Tony Danza Show, but the series was axed after only five episodes.

Danza also landed roles in acclaimed movies including Angels in the Outfield, Crash and Don Jon. Most recently, he starred on the 2018 Netflix series The Good Cop.

Danza divorced his wife, Tracy Robinson, in 2013 after 25 years of marriage. He was previously married to college sweetheart Rhonda Yeoman Ladanza. Tony has three daughters from his marriages, a son and a grandson.

While Light was best known for her work on Who's the Boss?, she also struck a chord with audiences for her stints on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Ugly Betty and Transparent, for which she received Golden Globe, Emmy and Critics' Choice Award nominations.

Light was also a Broadway star. She experienced success for her work on Other Desert Cities and The Assembled Parties, winning Tony Awards for both in 2012 and 2013.

She has been married to actor Robert Desiderio since 1985 after they both met on the set of the US soap opera One Life to Live. The couple don't have any children.

Katherine Helmond as Mona Robinson: Then

Katherine Helmond played Angela's snarky, free-spirited, man-eating mother Mona on Who's the Boss?

Mona was originally written as Angela's sister, but they found the role difficult to cast so they rewrote the character.

The rework was for the better as the show's dynamic would have been completely different had Helmond not been cast.

Helmond was already a famous face before her stint on the sitcom. She had starred in films such as Alfred Hitchcock's Family Plot and Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits and Brazil.

When Who's the Boss? wrapped, Helmond took a hiatus from acting. She eventually returned to star in the comedy series Coach and Everybody Loves Raymond, of which she earned an Emmy nod for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for playing Lois Whelan, the mother of Patricia Heaton's character Debra.

Helmond also voiced Lizzie, the widow of Radiator Springs founder Stanley in 2006's Cars and its two sequels.

The actress was married to David Christian from 1962 up until her death in 2019. She died from complications of Alzheimer's disease, aged 89.

In the late '90s, the actress also played Jennifer Mancini on Melrose Place before playing Phoebe Halliwell on Charmed for eight years.

After a brief marriage to rocker Cinjun Tate in 1999, Milano went on to marry CAA agent David Bugliari in 2009. They are now parents to son Milo, 10, and daughter Elizabella, seven.

Pintauro already had a few acting gigs under his belt before Who's the Boss? –he appeared in As the World Turns and Highway to Heaven.

However, he basically stepped away from the limelight after Who's the Boss? wrapped in 1992. He did return to the spotlight in 2015 for Oprah Winfrey's series Where Are They Now? During the interview, Pintauro – who came out in 1997 – revealed he had struggled with his public image and that he had been HIV-positive since 2003.
